Termites, they cause thousands of dollars in property damages. However, how do termites gain access to our house?
There are 3 main areas where termites can enter our homes. They include:
- Below Ground
- From Cracks and Crevices
- Through Attic Vents
Below Ground
Subterranean termites live in large underground colonies. One colony of termites consist of up to over a million termites. We always get the misconception that our homes are made up of block or concrete that termites can’t gain access to our homes. However, these pesky creatures still can invade our home through either plumbing or cracks in the concrete. Once they invade your home, these termites feed on wood flooring, drywall and many valuable items of furniture that we have in our home.
Cracks and Crevices
Termites can build mud tubes to access wood sources above ground. In the case of high rise property, if the building is relatively old, there may be cracks outside the building that were not checked. This may allow termites to build mud tubes to eventually be able to access your homes. They can enter through cracks as small as 1/32 of a centimetre to feed on your valuable furnitures.
Old Wooden Furniture At Home
Although we may love our wooden furniture as they are rustic and brings out a sense of calmness, these wood if they have cracks may cause a termites infestation. Alates (Termites with wings) found a small crack in the furniture, start to build a nest and build their colony. Over time, the colony grows and causes significant wood damage outside of the old wooden furniture. The best way to prevent this is to ensure that the old furniture is checked monthly and coated with a layer of protection.
What can we do?
Definitely, prevention is better than cure, the first level of checking is to see whether wooden powder can be seen near your wooden furniture. If there is, it may be a sign of termites invasion and that you need to immediately call for professional help.
Termites can also be hidden behind of close cabinets which are attached to the wall. This is the hardest to spot and without the right equipment, you won’t be able to know that they are there. You can definitely consult us for a Free Inspection At Your Home.
